#NYFW: All the Pretty Dresses

My sister in both life and blogging asked me yesterday (over gchat) what type of clothing I would design if I were a fashion designer. I figured her response would be sweaters given that she's spent her post-work hours of late blogging about knitted tops. My response was dresses for the simple reason that some dresses are just. so. pretty. Like a silver fox, sometimes I just can't stop staring at a pretty dress. 

Here are some dresses from #NYFW thus far that answer the ultimate question that goes through my mind sometimes/rarely/never: If I were going to the Academy Awards, what would I wear?

Grammy Thoughts 2.0

I wrote a premature post dedicated to Beyoncé's hair and Pharrell's hat earlier, but I have a few more musings to air.

• Robin Thicke is going to age well. I'm not mad at him for being Miley's partner-in-twerking or for singing a song and starring in a subsequent music video that is more than a little offensive to women everywhere. What's important is that his dad was in Growing Pains and that he dances really well. I'll never tire of Blurred Lines.

• There were a number of awkward shots of the audience throughout the show, most notably of audience members dancing during Pharrell, Daft Punk and Stevie Wonder's performance. Repeat offenders were Steven Tyler, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. 
• Really looking forward to seeing Steven Tyler's outfit in the Fashion Police section of US Weekly this week. 
• Why wasn't Jared Leto sporting the man bun?

• Ozzie Osbourne should be the star of every Above of the Influence commercial.
• Macklemore and Ryan Lewis win for best suits. Also, is Ryan Lewis a mute?

• I'm kind of over the Beatles. We get it, you rocked once and you still do and we don't a slideshow to prove it. What's one more Grammy, Paul McCartney?
• I really like Lorde, her hair, and her choice of purple make up. The pants she wore during her performance, not so much. 

• Where the eff was Justin Timberlake?

Grammy Hair/Headwear

You guys, we need to talk about two urgent Grammy-related things: Beyoncé's hair and Pharrell's hat.

Beyoncé's hair had all of the ingredients of a perfect lob: it's blunt, naturally curly, and ombre. I think it might replace Meg Ryan's hair in You've Got Mail as the model lob. It kind of has the yield sign thing going on that Mia Thermapolis lamented in her own pre-make over hair in The Princess Diaries, but since it's on Beyoncé's head, it works. It might not for the rest of us. I'm going to try anyway.

Pharrell, meanwhile, showed a whole new side of the chapeau trend. He had two chapeau changes last night, but the one he wore while presenting/accepting awards is worth discussing. I seriously wonder if he apparated into Dumbledore's office and took the Sorting Hat off the wall before coming to the Grammy's. It's hard to tell if the chapeau or the leather Adidas bomber was the focal point for the rest of his outfit, but it doesn't really matter because Pharrell could wear a paper bag and I would a) still worship the ground the he walks on and b) think it looked awesome.

Golden Globes Eyewear

Did anyone else notice the prevalence of eyewear at the Golden Globes? There were the usual suspects--Martin Scorsese, Meryl Streep and Bono--but there was also a slew of Hollywoodians who clearly opted for heavy frames over contact lenses. Let's go through the roster.

1. Robert Redford and David O. Russell: Not only does Russell look like Redford's Westchester-born and bred cousin, but both wore glasses that shouted "I'm an effing Hollywood intellectual."

2. P. Diddy and Bono would be wearing sunglasses indoors, if only to assert their respective rock star/hip hop mogul images amidst a crowd of actors, writers and directors. Neither is wearing transitional frames, so thank god for that. (Related: we could all take some cues on how to wear a beanie from The Edge.)

3. Diane Keaton's glasses are a natural addition to the rest of her look, so aren't very noteworthy. And since we can't really talk about Diane Keaton at the Golden Globes without discussing her suit, we should just be thankful that she isn't wearing one of those thick belt-full skirt ensembles from Because I Said So, or her 2004 Golden Globes outfit.

4. Johnny Depp once again proved not only that his looks get better with age, but that a pair of thick frames can make an already gorgeous man ten times more swoon-worthy. Hot teacher alert.

5. Stephanie Beatriz of Brooklyn Nine-Nine was a serious offender in the eyewear category. Compared with Diane Keaton, Beatriz's glasses looked out of place and did nothing for the rest of her outfit. Wow, brutal. Do you think she's trying to be ironic?

Golden Globes Oh La La

I wish I could put into words how much I love awards shows. The mere thought of sitting on my couch and watching actors in impeccably well-fitted suits and actresses in debatably tasteful yet nonetheless glamorous gowns makes me squeal. One of my friends accurately summed up the awards show euphoria that comes over both of us when she declared to be the best version of herself while watching an awards show. Too right.

I started writing notes in my phone at the beginning of the show, but then I went to Twitter, got a little overwhelmed by the hyperactivity of the Twittersphere and started tweeting every celebrity-related musing that came to mind. By the end of the show, I had drafted only a few notes in my phone and a lot of Matt Damon-related Tweets. (Shout out to my sister for favoriting them all.)

From my phone notes:

• Why does Bono still wear those glasses? 
• Glad to see Usher is still relevant and presenting at the Golden Globes
• Going to go to Sephora to ask for Matthew McConaughey's bronzer
• I need to start doing more push ups (Operation Robyn Wright)
• If I get nominated for a Golden Globe, I'm going to plan my walk to the stage ahead of time

Anyway, let's talk about da fahshahn. Gwyneth Paltrow (one half of my all-time favorite celebrity couple) didn't walk the red carpet but her dress is in my top five favorites of the night. (Unrelated, but the camera cut to a shot of Gwyneth opening a bottle of water during the show, #alwaysonacleanse.)

Another fav was Caitlin Fitzgerald. The color and cut of her dress was a combined 10, and her shoes looked like a really delicious popsicle. Also her hair. Wow. Her blunt lob (in portmanteau speak, that's a blob) is my new hair inspiration, and I'd bring a picture of it to the salon the next time I get a haircut, but my ongoing mission to find the cheapest haircut in New York usually leaves me with a blunt/uneven lob anyway.

Emma Watson, meanwhile, took the whole dress-over-pants look to a new level with her Dior ensemble. The dress was a good color, she rocked the side part low bun combo, and her matching of navy blue shoes with black pants was risky but worth it. I feel like this look could be easily replicated with a pair of J.Crew Minnie pants but I'm not going to be the one to test it out.
